Spoiler:
In the age of Sky Sports’ supersonic sports coverage, barely a fart or a pick of the nose is missed by the all-seeing-all-knowing cameras planted around each and every stadium on matchday.
But on Tuesday night, the TV cameras seem to have missed a pretty epic brawl between Vincent Kompany and Franck Ribery, according to Eurosport’s eagle-eyed Daniel Rathjen, who claims to have witnessed the whole thing, a scene so violent he deems it an ‘assault’.
He describes punches being thrown, even though the picture above appears to be more of a slap/facepalm from Ribery:
Whether the scene was preceded by a duel or a war of words, it was not obvious, but what was clearly visible in the stadium from the stands was that Kompany stormed angrily at Ribery on the halfway line and then tried to grab him by the throat. Ribery struck out and hit the Belgian in the face. A clear assault.
Kompany then threw a punch back, but missed the Frenchman before the opponents parted again and went about their actual job – playing football.
The ball was elsewhere at the time, which the scramble taking place behind the back of Czech referee Pavel Kralovec.
Lucky for them it was missed by the ref, as they surely would have both been directly sent off. And just as well we have only Rathjen’s word to go by, as if it had been picked up by TV, they could have faced retrospective bans.
Then again, the German journo may be embellishing the story just a bit – a full-on punch-up in the middle of a Champions League game, how often does that happen?
And the cameras just so happened to miss it…
