Hello everybody, today we´re going to present you
Our presentation deals with the topic Turkish business etiquette .
Turkey is a country that lies on the axis of Asia and Europe and the most of the population are Muslims. Turkish culture is a blend of East and West and long holding of tradition. Business etiquette in Turkey is different than Western etiquette, especially the religious traditions.
When you will make an appointment it´s necessary to do it at least one to two weeks in advance over the telephone and make sure that you do not arrange the meeting during the July or August, when most Turkish people take their vocation. Also be aware of important holidays like Ramadan, when most Turks will have a day off. In Germany it´s near the same of concerning time because German companies are very similar to Turkish companies.
The next point I would like to mention is about the business dress. Turkish business dress is conservative. They take punctuality for business meetings very seriously and expect that you will do likewise. Men should wear a suit and tie, and woman should wear professional dress as well. In the summertime when it gets very hot, a shirt without a tie and slacks are acceptable, but never shorts for men. Woman should dress conservatively without exposing their arms or legs, or wearing tight-fitting clothing. In Germany it isn´t so demanding, it´s only important to be well- tended (gepflegt) and to be friendly. Additionally Turkish tradition and religion still have an influence on the business dress.
Next I will tell you something about the gift giving in the Turkish business. Gift giving in Turkish culture is not necessary. They are too lavish and personal. Acceptable gifts for business are items for the office, e.g. quality pens, maybe with your company logo. In Germany it´s absolutely not a duty to bring a gift to business meetings but usually you do to represent your company in a good way.
Now I hand over to Dennis, who would like to tell you something about the Dining.
Thanks Dennis.
Yes, the building of strong relations is very important in every business in the whole world. Turks prefer to do business with people they know and trust, so it is important for them to develop relationships with you over extended meals that are meant to be purely social at first. Turkish meals are meant for relaxing and engaging in good conversation. I think the fact to build strong relations is important to all business industries.
