Also allgemein super nice gemacht.

Let’s start with a funfact that I just picked up: You are the only one in Complexity without a brother in the team. How do you feel about that?

At first I was thinking about it a lot: How is it going to be? How is it going to work out? Now it’s not really something I am thinking about anymore. I see them as my friends now and treat them like this.

Tell me – what is it like to be living with your friends and probably your manager in the same house?

Right now it’s us five players and Josh, you have probably seen him around. He’s with us at nearly every event. It’s fun. I would compare it to living in a college dorm. It can get a little messy with six young man aging from 18 to 25. So there’s a negative aspect to it as well, but overall it’s mostly just fun.

I guess a lot of people would like to be professional gamers as well and you make it sound really fun, but I’d imagine that there is a lot of pressure on you as well and the constant feeling of not being prepared enough. What is the live of a progamer like?

It looks funnier and more awesome than it actually is. There are certainly moments when it’s really great being a pro player, but there are also things that are less fun. All the time you have to be scrimming, playing pubs, theorycrafting and the traveling of course. We probably travel 70 hours every months.

              So those are mostly cons.

Yes, and as well the visa issues, that just sucks. But when you get on the stage and you play and you win, that’s what makes it all worth it.

You don’t choose to be a pro player, eventually you become one. Looking back, what is something that you did not expect?

The biggest downside is that I don’t get to see my friends, because I am living in America. The other thing is that this is a very untraditional career choice. Your type of live is very obscure, it does not have a direct way. Nobody knows where Esport is going, nobody knows where Dota is going. So in the future, who knows. I might be working with Dota still, I might be playing, I might be a caster. It has a sense of insecurity in comparison to going to college and finding a job afterwards.

Is that something that is regularly on your mind?

A little bit. I still consider myself young, so I think its fine for some more years to come, but at some point I’ll have to think about it.

I assume you finished your school degree and could apply for university?

I actually studied for one semester before I quit for playing Dota full-time.

Do you think a lot of other pro players are concerned with the uncertainty of the job?

I believe it’s a matter of age and culture and values. A lot of younger players don’t care about it.

I heard this about League of Legends recently and I think, to some degree it is true for Dota as well: The time of being a pro player is limited.

A lot of people are saying that and I think this is a little annoying, because I don’t think this is the case for Dota. There are other factors for quitting pro gaming. I guess, with a certain age, let’s say 27 or 30, other motives become more important: Founding a family, settling down, building a house and getting kids. I think, this is the major reason for people quitting, because it does not fit the pro player lifestyle, or at least it’s very dificult.

I actually meant that in a different way. Let’s take Alliance. The meta around TI3 suited them perfectly, afterwards their performance dropped significantly.

Sure, that’s true as well. A lot of the success depends on patches and how able you are to adapt and this makes a future in Dota extremely unpredictable. Your income depends on patches and performance swings, so it’s really difficult to build a stable live on this foundation.

Looking in the future – where do you see yourself in a few years?

Naturally I’d like to play Dota for a little longer and should I get the opportunity to translate that into something more stable with a perspective, I’d like to go that path. Otherwise I’d go back to university to study social psychology.

For now, it is looking pretty good for you and Complexity. Seven or eight months ago, nobody would have considered you a top team. What’s the reason for your success?

I agree with you that people would not consider us a top tier team a while back. Our players were not really known back then and we were basically HoN-trash. At that time, we’ve been players in the best HoN-teams and probably the best players around. From our point of view, we always felt that we were going to succeed. That it would just take some time to adapt. Right now, we didn’t reach our full potential yet and it is still a long way to go.

Your next big tournament is The International 2016.

Yes, that is true. There are some other tournaments before that, Starladder and The Summit, but unfortunately we lost the qualifiers to Digital Chaos.

You say unfortunately. There are other teams that skip minor tournaments in order to be unpredictable, to stay rested and to prepare in a bootcamp.

If I had a choice, I’d rather compete in as many tournaments as possible. Especially our team, we do way better when we have matches that matter. In scrims, you can have a bad day. Playing matches that matter is important for us to increase our performance and to stay prepared. I don’t see the point in skipping a tournament and keep scrimming if you have the opportunity to play in a competition and measure your skill with others in a good tournament.

Let’s talk about the invites to The International. Do you expect to be invited?

I think, if Valve invites twelve teams, we have really good chances. If they choose to invite eight or less teams, it’s unlikely that we will be considered. There is DC and us, since EG can’t be invited due to the roster lock. It’s possible to make a case for both of us: We’ve been stable and we are around a lot longer, but they have beaten us head-to-head. Finally, it’s just up to Valve. I think it’s difficult to tell our chances, so I really don’t know. I just hope for the best.

Should we play the qualifiers, I think our odds are pretty good. There are definitely more stronger teams around in comparison to the Major qualifiers, yet I’m pretty confident.

Probably, EG will have to qualify for the regional qualifiers. How do you assess their chances?

They’ll definitely have to. This is what the system does to you. Honestly, I am more concerned for them to not make it through the opens. Should they qualify for the regional qualifier, I think they’ll make it to The International no matter what. But in the qualifiers, they might just right into an 8k-stack running level 1 Roshan, so really anything could happen there. It will be very interesting to see.

Indeed. Thanks for having me, the last words are yours.

It was awesome, I’ll definitely check out readmore. Shoutouts to all of our fans.
